"SUMMER STARS" PROGRAMS
Work Program
Residential children ages 14 and over participate in an on-campus summer work program. The program is designed to provide the participants training and experiences that will prepare them to be productive citizens in the work force. Together with their work supervisors, the youth research their projects, purchase supplies, learn to use a variety of tools and other work resources to ultimately complete the project during the six-week period of the program. The participants learn to arrive to work on time, follow directions from supervisors, and manage the normal day-to-day workplace frustration while learning to build and/or beautify. Through the course of their Summer Work Program, the children are encouraged to save money, learn how to fill out a deposit and withdrawal slip and, in general, feel good about having their own money to spend.
Camp Program
Our residents under the age of 14 participate in a highly structured summer camp program. This program allows young people the opportunity to explore the community in a safe way under the supervision of childcare workers. Each week the children go on field trips and participate in New Haven area camp programs with other children. They use public transportation to get around the immediate area and school buses while going to museums and activities that allow them to broaden their cultural experiences.
