The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for overseeing the delivery of health services for clients of The Children’s Center of Hamden as defined by their treatment program. The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for carrying out the treatment philosophy of the agency, and has a significant role in shaping that philosophy as a member of the Management Team. The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for making nursing diagnosis of actual or potential health problems, collaborating in the implementation of the medical treatment regimen under the direction of a licensed Physician, Physician’s Assistant, Advanced Practice Nurse or Dentist. The employee is also responsible for ensuring a safe environment conducive to the treatment of children and youth at The Children’s Center of Hamden.

This individual is responsible for the hiring, training and scheduling of Nurses. In addition, the employee is responsible for ensuring the appropriate supervision and progressive discipline for these employees. In carrying out the above responsibilities, the Director of Nursing Services interacts with all administrative and treatment staff, as well as numerous outside agencies and other professionals, DCF, physicians, hospitals, and private consultants. The Director of Nursing Services is responsible to the Chief Administrator for Residential Services. This individual is expected to perform other duties.

Days off and schedule:

Monday–Friday, 37.5 hours. Flexibility in schedule may be required.


  • Hires, trains, schedules and disciplines RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants and DCF Medication Certified Staff in the performance of medication administration.
  • Creates a positive work environment for staff by attending to morale issues, training needs and system issues.
  • Provides for health education to meet staff and client needs.
  • Implements Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Utilization Review (UR) studies within the department that ensure and facilitate quality service delivery.
  • Maintains records including medical files, DCF reports and any other documentation needed.


Two or more years of administrative experience with a pediatric population.


  • CT licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or significant experience (5+ years) with pediatric psychiatric population required.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, organizational and supervisory skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to supervise and educate staff to ensure the delivery of health services in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to organize, manage and complete nursing functions and responsibilities.
  • Experience with DDS programming is a plus.
