The START (Short Term Acute Residential Treatment) Program is an intensive
24-hour, out of home alternative to hospital based psychiatric care. It is also
used as a step-down from hospital care. Lengths of stay are varied and dependent
upon medical necessity for this intensive program. A discrete living unit
segregated from our other programs, this program has a capacity of 17 beds.
The START Program services boys ranging in age from 7 to 13 who are in need of a
moderately intense, staff secure setting due to significant psychiatric or
behavioral difficulties. Each child in the START Program has an individualized,
focal treatment plan designed to target specific treatment needs and services in
order to target a 90 day length of stay or less. All of the child’s treatment
has oversight by our Consulting Child Psychiatrist.
The children in the START Program receive educational services on grounds at
Whitney Hall School. In addition, medical services, medication management,
therapeutic recreation and all personal needs are provided. Treatment services
include individual, group and family therapy as specified on the child’s
treatment plan. The living environment is structured with a trauma informed
behavior management system designed to strengthen relationships and modify
behaviors with realistic consequences and positive motivators.
