Whitney Hall School is The Children’s Center’s on-grounds Special Education
school which provides educational services for the boys and girls in the
Residential and Clinical Day Programs. Fully accredited by the State of Connecticut, the
school teaches a daily average of 93 students.
The school provides 25 hours of classroom instruction per week over the 180-day
school year. Students receive a full complement of academic subject matter plus
physical education, computers, reading help, and speech and language services
when needed. Referral sources include Local Educational Authorities (LEAs) for
Clincal Day program students, while students in the residential program are referred by
sources for other than educational reasons. The average classroom size is nine
students per teacher.
The typical student at Whitney Hall School has significant behavioral and
emotional issues with about 40 percent also experiencing actual learning
disabilities as well. History of school failure, absenteeism and multiple
academic placements contribute to students being two to three grade levels
behind on average. Intellectual functioning tends to be in a low-average to
average range.
The school currently has ten core classroom teachers and four specials, all with
at least a Bachelor’s degree and Special Education certification. The teachers
are under the supervision of the Director of Education.
